Day trips

Four day-trip ideas from Syracuse

Noto, Pantalica, Cava Grande, Catania and Etna are options for a day trip from Syracuse. Distances and journey times depend on the access point, route and traffic; check the map before setting off.

The four day trips

For every destination: what to see, when to go and a plan B for bad weather. Check routes and travel times on the map.

The Sicilian baroque

Noto

34.7 km 39′ by car

What to see

The UNESCO-listed baroque centre: the Duomo, Palazzo Ducezio and the catacombs of San Giovanni, plus the edges of the valley. A town you can cross on foot in half a day.

When to go

On weekdays and early in the morning: the centre fills up and the traffic on the way back concentrates in the late afternoon.

If the weather turns

The baroque town can be visited in the rain too, with several covered areas. The Catacombs of San Giovanni are in Syracuse; check the route and opening hours before visiting.

The necropolis and the Anapo valley

Pantalica reserve

33.9 km 38′ by car

What to see

The largest necropolis in Sicily: the rock-cut tombs, the caves of the Bove stream, the Anapo valley and its natural pools. Distances and journey times depend on the access point; check the route before setting off.

When to go

At dawn or before 9:00: the paths are rough and open, and in the middle of the day the sun leaves no choice.

If the weather turns

The reserve is entirely outdoors: if it rains, stay in the city, at Neapolis (19 minutes on foot) or in the catacombs.

Salt pans and white cliffs

Cava Grande del Cassibile

14.1 km 21′ by car

What to see

The Cassibile nature reserve: the river, the salt pans, the white cliffs dropping to the sea and the mouth where fresh water meets salt. The closest and the lightest of the four.

When to go

In the afternoon, when the light is lower and the temperatures drop; in winter the morning works just as well.

If the weather turns

The reserve is large and much of it stays open and worth seeing under a grey sky. Alternatively, the Ortigia waterfront is 7 minutes on foot.

The volcano and the city facing it

Catania and Mount Etna

64.0 km 65′ by car

What to see

In Catania the historic centre, the Duomo, the Teatro Massimo Bellini and the Capo markets; then Etna, with its silent craters and volcanic landscapes up to the higher altitudes.

When to go

All year round, but on Etna the morning counts: the sky is clearer and the higher slopes are cooler.

If the weather turns

Catania is the smart choice: markets, museums and Via Etnea are all under cover.

Catania-Fontanarossa airport

62.0 km · 63′ by car — Catania-Fontanarossa Airport is one of the gateways to eastern Sicily. Continue overland to reach Noto or Pantalica.

How to organise it

Two ways, one choice.

With your own car

You stay independent: leave when you like, stop where you like, and use the free street parking in Syracuse as your base. It is the simplest option if you already have a car.

With a guided tour

Without a car, a guided tour is the alternative: local agencies usually organise them and they include the transfer. We do not sell tours here, but your host can help you arrange the departure.

When to leave

For Noto and Pantalica, leave by 9:00: you arrive while the sites are still quiet and you drive back in the less crowded hours. For Cava Grande and Etna the afternoon works perfectly.

Parking

In Syracuse you start from the free parking space outside the house. At the reserves and the villages on the route, use the public car parks at the entrance: the inner areas are almost always closed to traffic.

The base for early starts

37 Viale Luigi Cadorna: the station is 10 minutes on foot, the bus terminal 10, the sea 7. Free parking right outside the door.
